    Remembering 9/11

American Heroes (Acrostic Poem) by DD10

    Americans look back

    Murmur words of sorrow

Early that day we had an attack

    Remember even tomorrow

    It was tragic, many killed

    Crashing - many buildings took

    Airplanes crashed, lot to build

    Never forget how it shook

    Here and there

    Everywhere

    Roads of hope were here

    Oh, win this war

    Evermore

S.A.V.E us! (Soldiers are venturing everywhere)

American Heroes (An Acrostic Poem) by DD8

A flag waves high in the air

    Memories from those who care

    Early on that September day

    Rising towers fell away

    Inside many people died

    Constantly people died

    Always remember

    Never forget

    Hardest thing that ever happened

Evil was there, but now we're safe

    Roses on the ground

Once the bad guys came on that sad day

Everyone didn't know what to say

So we celebrate to remember the people we lost.

Some Highlights of our School Week

Saturday, September 6, 2008, 02:20 PM EST [General]

We did a lot of neat things this week and I thought I'd share some of them today. As I've shared before, dd10's history class is quite different this year. We are reading out of the "A History of the US" books by Joy Hakim. There are a lot of statements in the beginning of the book that are based on evolution, and since I believe in creation, I've had to do a lot of research to understand both theories. It's been very interesting. One of the projects dd did this week was create a Power Point presentation on the Inuits (eskimos). She really did a great job and she pretty much did it on her own. Another thing she did this week, was write a newspaper article on the Plains indians and explain their disappearance. I haven't checked her work yet, but she did that on the computer as well.

Dd8 is reviewing the Middle ages in her history class. Because of the holiday and some technical difficulties during the week, she only had history once. She made a poster to promote the epic poem "The Divine Comedy" by Dante. We added some things to the poster like angels, the sun, stars and moon, and the philosopher Thomas Aquinas, since they all have to do with the poem. We hung it in the school room. DD added the phrase, "Only 5.99 at a Monestary near you." LOL

We had some fun projects in art as well. DD8 painted all the colors on the color wheel (primary, secondary, and intermediate).

Of course all the extra paint couldn't go to waste, so she painted lots of other pictures,, too. DD10 painted a shape and then used "cool" colors to color it in layers.

DD8 also sculpted a "representational (real-looking) duck out of sculpey clay, and dd10 drew a picture of a two-headed turtle. She was trying to trick me into thinking it was an abstract form of art, but she had heard on the news that one had actually been born. She was tickled that her trick worked!

Science projects this week were interesting as well. We made a treatment plant in which we cleaned soil out of water so that it ran clear again. We also experimented with polluting water with oil and tried different ways of cleaning it up.

We now have signs posted at all the water faucets in the house of how to prevent water pollution, lol. DD8 was learning about weather this week. We learned about fronts, and weather maps, and kinds of clouds, etc.

After we finished reading the novel, "The Hundred Dresses" the girls made a commerical for the book. It included a "clip" from the book and a promotion to go out and get a copy.

Of course, we did lots of math, reading, grammar, etc also, but those are the things most worth mentioning!

    What a weekend!

Monday, September 1, 2008, 03:48 PM EST [General]

It has been a crazy holiday weekend. On Saturday, we got up early to go to a flea market. We have some friends who go camping at a lake on holiday weekends. This particular weekend they were having a sale at the campground to raise money for missionaries in the Ukraine. I love flea markets and yard sales! Here's what I found:

2 purses. One is big enough for my Bible to take to church and the other one is a small, everyday purse.

3 new binders - since we've already outgrown the ones we made a few weeks ago!

    an old Abeka science book,

and a bunch of kitchen utensils. Altogether, I spent about $3!

Next, our friends talked us into taking a 9-mile bike ride! The whole trail is 7 miles (14 round trip), but after 4.5 we turned around. Not before enjoying sitting out by the lake and enjoying a drink for a while first, though:

Then, it was on to B-I-L's house to help him remove a stump from his yard. In the process, DH cut the artery below his knee and needed to go to the hospital to get 12 staples put in his leg! OUCH! (Don't worry - no pictures). We got home about 2:30 am.

The next day we were supposed to go to my dad's church and then back to his house to help (well DH, not me) him put roof tresses on the garage he is building. We didn't make it to church after our late night, but we did go down to my dad's. I was worried about DH tearing open the staples, but he took it easy. He's the one in the middle.

Here they are putting the last one on. Soon after this picture, we ate pizza together and then headed home. It was a busy weekend!
