    I joined Twitter

Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 08:15 PM EST [WIPped UFOer]

I kept hearing a buzz about Twitter, so I finally joined as WIPpedUFOer, again, misspelling my own name on purpose, eliminating and changing letters so as not to be found officially (I feel like a spy that way, plus no weirdos can get in touch with me or my kids if I get that creepy vibe)

I didn't even know what a Twitter was, but it's sort of a limited space blog where you just update the cyberworld on what you're doing right now.  Strangely addictive and fun.  I'll most likely use it for a week and forget about it, like I do with other things novel.

Gotta run, toddler in lap for attn.

    I finished the cake!

Sunday, March 29, 2009, 11:00 PM EST [WIPped UFOer]

Okay, so I posted before how I took patterns off the Internet, from my favorite free pattern website.  I finished the project for my sister's wedding in July!  The shower is in April, and I hope to "wow" her at the shower with this:

The whole thing looks a little lopsided because I don't have plate sets that match in size, but I hope you can get the idea.

I especially like the design details at the bottom of the bottom layer.  I changed the pattern into an amigurumi style after the increases for the largest plate were finished, and the 2 middle layers were strictly done without joining rounds.

The freeform crochet vines were fun to make, and I would do that all over again.  It was fun and full of whimsy with leaves both designed by myself and other free patterns for leaves.  I did the flowers after the vines, again with a free daisy crochet pattern, and tweaked it a little to get them to look like I wanted them to.

I pinned the vines down by tying the yellow daisy flower ends through the 'cake' and tying off.  Some of the vines were 'convinced' to stay where they are by a tie in of the same color.

Here's a peek at the mismatched plates underneath, which also showcases some nice detail work where my closeups failed, LOL.

The bunny cake topper pattern was changed in color, and that I added a tail, and stuck a boquet in her hand that matched the freeform vines I was producing, and there are pipe cleaners in the bent ears to get them to stay bent.

I was going for the detail pictures to show the delicacy of her veil flowers...

Again, going for detail of the groom's little tuxedo and flower, but it's blurry :(

The MAIN thing I changed was the wedding cake topper stand.  For that I totally winged it using the loop stitch (LOOKS fancy, truly easy if you get the hang of it - just stick your finger in the way of a sc's yo, and leave it in while you complete the st, remove finger before starting next stitch.  I started with 6 loop sc in a 3ch loop and increased like I would have normally for a circle.  It didn't turn out too bad.  I may make another thing like that for the Easter Bunny to use in the bottom of the Easter baskets this (okay, let's be honest -) NEXT year.

I hoped you enjoyed viewing as much as I enjoyed making it!

    WIPpedUFOer

Friday, March 13, 2009, 01:22 PM EST [WIPped UFOer]

I've been browsing the 'net, looking for the perfect outlet for my creativity with yarn, and haven't had much luck.  I'm linking this 'new' blog to the site I found in the hopes I can blog my entries here, becoming less techtarded by a fraction of a point.

I will start off with defining (for my hs buddies unaware of knitlish) the various knit/crochet-specific shortcuts as I use them, and leave it up to you to remember them as we go on.  WIP is shorthand for Work In Progress.  UFO is UnFinished Object.

As my living room (LR) is strewn with UFOs and WIPs, I decided to use WIPped UFOer as my screen name.  Thankfully, no one else has taken that ID yet!

Projects I'm working on include a prayer shawl (knit-in-progress; KIP), a stuffed cat (KIP), an afghan for my family (crochet in progress; CIP) (or maybe that's a UFO... haven't worked it in a while), and most currently a gorgeous wedding cake plate cover from crochet pattern central with amigurumi bunnies on top (you need to be a Lion Brand member to see the pic of the bunnies until I get my new computer sorted out  - another blog post in itself!).  I also am 2/3rds of the way done with my first sock pair (k) and have a toddler blanket that may be a UFCO until I clean up a bit.  I have a dog bed I started that is a CIP working it's way into a UFCO unless I seriously vow to stop additional works until projects are finished. (HAHAHA! - every k/c'er's BIGGEST lie!!!)

The wedding cake and topper patterns were modified to fit my SIL's wedding colors, and her specific flower (yellow daisies).  I PROMISE to post pics once I find my digital camera cord, recharge my camera batteries and set up a photo shoot somewhere with good lighting (who are we kidding, here, really?... I may NEVER capture this before the July wedding...).  Once I finish this cake and topper, I PROMISE not to start anything new.

(note: I finished it! see other blog posts for full details!!)

Past designs I've come up with have been the thumb-sucker mittens in crochet, and a Yo Gabba Gabba! inspired Brobee monster hat for my toddler, among other various creations in afghan size, experimenting with different textures, fibers, and stitches (sts).  I'm glad to be a part of a k/c blogosphere, and HOPEFULLY will post many stories about finishing (or not finishing) various projects.
