    Not going so well...

Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 08:49 AM PST [General]

Wow, if anyone had asked me a few weks ago which would be the harder of the two. I would have said without even thinking about it, SAM! Haley is easy, she's only in the 5th grade, even I can handle that.

Sam really has surprised me this year. She hasn't taken this much interest in school since.. Well to be honest, I really can't remember when. She loves it. She gets up every morning goes straight to the computer and gets to work. Last year she was in a charter school and I was hard pressed just to get her to open a book. I was so worried we would have the same problem this year. But so far she's actually ahead in everything. I'm so proud of her!!

Now Haley on the other hand. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong there. I would love to place the blame entirely on the shoulders of all those people that decided she didn't need to know anything to be passed to the next grade. But I have to take a lot of that blame on myself. I should have known. If I had actually paid attention to what she was learning in school, I WOULD have known. But I thought, hey, they are the teachers, they know what they are doing. If they tell me she's performing at grade level, then she must be doing alright.  I couldn't have been more wrong. Which is why Haley is now home schooled.

My little girl has been one of those that has just been shoved through the cracks. She can read, tho not at the level she should be. The worst is math. I have known she has problems with math. But when a child is in the fifth grade you assume they have a pretty good grasp on addition and subtraction and an alright one on multiplication and division. I'm learning not to assume anything. Each day we struggle through math, it takes hours. I know she is coming to hate it, but it needs to be done, right? I may have to get her a tutor , someone that maybe knows a few tricks to help them learn it. I'm out of ideas. And by the end of the day we are both in tears. School is not supposed to be like this.

I'm not ready to give up on this, but I am close. We can't go on stressing constantly about school. So far I love the K-12 curriculum. I'm actually learning a lot too lol.  I guess we will see how this week goes.

    School starts tomorrow...

Monday, September 3, 2007, 09:27 PM PST [General]

I can't help feeling that we are totally and completely unprepared for the first day of school tomorrow, and I'm really stressed.

First of all we don't have everything yet from K-12, which would probably be fine if we had done this before. We have most of the things, but since this is new to us I have no idea what they actually need for the first couple of days. I'm really trying this year to start them out on time and keep them that way. I'm also not sure what supplies they will be needing. I bought just the basics plus a couple of big 3 ring binders to put their work in.

I'm pretty lost in the school forums too. I have no idea where I need to go to find the info that I am looking for.  For that matter I'm not entirely sure what it is that I'm looking for.

I really don't think that Haleys schooling will be to difficult. Sam on the other hand is in high school and we haven't even seen what a daily plan looks like for her.

Well hopefully sometime in the next couple of weeks we will get into some kind of a routine and everything will smooth out a little for us. I just hope that until then I can keep from pulling out my hair lol.

Well off to see what kind of tutorials and/or other info that I can find.

Welcome to you and your family. I am new to this too. I have a son doing his senior year with k12. So far it is going better than I expected. So much better than the brick and mortar school here.
